Aakash 2 world’s cheapest tablet device,Price for indian students

It seems that the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) and Datawind, the maker of Aakash tablet device have again come to friendly terms and the next version of the device, Aakash 2, will also be brought to you by the same company. After much controversy and failure of the world’s cheapest tablet device, Aakash, the two parties got against each other and it was expected that the government will move on to some other company.

But now things seem to have sorted out and the next generation Aakash has appeared. NYT’s India Ink, which got access to the device, says that the Aakash 2 will be available to the students for $21 i.e. Rs 1,132. The tablet will be available for the students of 20,000 colleges and 416 Universities. Datawind also has plans to retail variants of the tablet in the market under its own brand ‘Ubislate’ for Rs 3,499 and Rs 4,299.

The next generation Aakash will sport a 17.8-cm (7-inch) capacitive display, 4GB of internal storage along with a memory card slot, 256MB RAM and a 800MHz Cortex A8 processor. The tablet will be offered in two variants including a Wi-Fi only model and a model with a SIM card slot for data connectivity. The budget tablet will run Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

It is worth mentioning here that Datawind is expected to supply 100,000 units of the tablet to IIT Bombay for testing and pilot trials in the next six months. IIT Bombay replaced IIT Rajasthan, who was initially responsible for handling the project.
