Getting a SIM will no longer be an easy task. The Authority has now taken concrete steps to avoid forgery and other illegal activities. According the reports, subscribers will now undergo physical verification of facts to get a SIM card. And if someone submits forged documents, it will immediately lead to police inquiry.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has now made a tough set of guidelines which is expected to bring down the illegal activities. Now, the operators will be held responsible for submission of any inaccurate information provided by subscribers for buying a new pre-paid or a post-paid mobile connection.

These new rules set by DoT states that only an authorised dealer will be permitted to sell SIM cards. And in case the dealer finds that the documents submitted by the subscriber are forged that he will have to register a police complain against the person. Also, the person will have sign out an undertaking which says that the dealer has seen the applicant and matched the photograph which is attached to the application form.

Rajan S Mathews, director general, COAI said, “By and large we are compliant with most of the norms though there are a few areas for which we have sought clarifications from DoT like verification of date of birth and age,” reports PTI. Dealers and operators will have to tighten the verification process of the documents and certificates.
